The issue of drive mapping on Windows with USB devices is a commonly researched subject online. Sometime mapping issues can result in the computer becoming unresponsive when the UltraDisk DVR10 is inserted. The DVR10 maps a CD and a remote storage partition to your computer when you insert it. Results depend on the history of the specific machine and the issue is attributed to Microsoft Operating system not releasing historic or corrupt USB id entries. Windows has a tendancy to not release USB information from previous USB devices, most likely through corruption from a previously failed USB device. Even if they are no longer used, in a registry entry called USBSTOR the details remain of every device you have used... A test on another computer would always confirm this issue, the device itself is not faulty.

The following steps will rebuild your USBSTOR when used with the UltraDisk DVR10

Download Listusbdrives.zip list all USB drive details and export details to a text pad.
Download and extract to desktop/folder to run. To generate the txt file output double click on 'ListUsbDrives_To_Notepad.cmd'
Download Drivecleanup.zip removes all non present storage volumes and USB drives.

If you have used a lot of USB devices, its time you made room for some more..
DriveCleanup V0.8 - removes non present drives from the device tree
Freeware by Uwe Sieber (c) 2007-2011 Removes from the device tree non present
- USB hubs
- USB mass storage devices
- USB Disk devices
- USB CDROM devices
- USB Floppy devices
- USB Storage Volumes
- USB WPD devices (Vista, Win7 only)

When the drives have been refreshed, restart the pc it will reconfigure your operating system USBSTOR, a setting in the windows system that holds onto USB device information, drive letters and registry entries. They will be rebuilt automatically when you restart the computer.

Download UltraDisk Voice Memo Player DVR10 Software to your desktop from:

Insert the DVR10 and launch the software from the desktop the drive letter shown for your recording data is shown in the window at the top, if your pc has not mapped the drive then this can be managed by the following, you may need to manually allocate it, the following article explains.

When the DVR10 is inserted into an Apple Mac laptop or computer the Mac creates folders that are not compatible with the UltraDisk software (PC) and prevents the recorder from starting correctly.

The .spotlight-v100 and .trashes folders were created automatically by an Apple Macintosh computer system that the USB flash drive was plugged in before.

These two folders are automatically created whenever a USB flash drive is connected to a computer system running an Apple Mac operating system.

Spotlight is a indexing process on the Mac that will save the information that are gathered in the .spotlight-v100 directory.

The .trashes folder on the other hand is simply a trash folder for the specific drive which is also created by Apple Macintosh computer systems.

These files prevent the DVR10 from starting / the led working but can be simply removed by deleting from the remote usb folder when you insert it into a PC. This is the drive with the REC_DATA folder.

As soon as this is done it will start working.

As soon as this is done it will start working.

To perfom this firmly insert a paperclip into the reset hole as shown for 3 seconds. This will restore the unit to its factory settings and perform a hard reset, no recordings will be lost during this process.

Re-insert the DVR10 into the PC USB connection, ensure that the DVR10 is in the switched off position and not recording. Note that the LED illuminates, the PC recognises the device either via autpoplay or should be seen via 'my computer' Devices with removable storage .

Export Sysinfo to text file Windows XP Vista 7

How to Export Sysinfo to a text file in Windows XP Vista 7

Systeminfo.exe show what kind of processor you have, how much RAM, any extra PCI cards installed in your system. Basically info you might be interested in but info that could be invaluable to someone working on the system after it encounters a problem.

Left-click on Start- Run.

Type cmd in the Run box.

At the command prompt type cd my documents

If you aren't brought into the My Documents directory then note what the path is before the command prompt in the cmd window. (c:\Documents and Settings\username\...)

Type systeminfo > sysinfo.txt

This command will run systeminfo.exe and create a new file called sysinfo.txt with the results of running systeminfo.exe.

Type exit.

Double-click on My Documents.

Double click on sysinfo.txt to open it in your default text editor (ie. notepad.exe).

Print sysinfo.txt and file it away with your computer purchase information. It better to be safe than sorry.

OR

If you right-click on a file with a .txt extension you will haved thr option to Print.

Left-click on Print.

Note:

Alot of DOS-style commands have simple plain text output. Specifying > after a command like that will send the results to a text file named whatever you specify after the >. To make things easy you could always run systeminfo > c:\sysinfo.txt and then you only have to find sysinfo.txt under My Computer --> (C:).

Follow these steps to count the number of files that are inside a group of selected folders:

First, open the folder whose content you want to count.

Windows File Explorer will open, hold down the control key on your keyboard (Ctrl), and then click on each of the folders whose files you want to count. If you want to select all subfolders inside the current folder, just press the "Ctrl+A" keyboard shortcut to highlight them all..

Once you have finished selecting all folders, you can figure out how many files they contain (total number) by right-clicking over them, and choose "Properties" from the drop doen context menu.

Windows 7 / Vista / XP will open the Properties dialog for all the selected folders, and give you a total file count; note that you can have a mixed selection, containing regular files as well as folders.

You can tell from the screenshot below that Windows will give you a breakdown like "152 Files, 6 Folders": when you see "Multiple Types" under the Type of selection you have, you know that your selection includes both files and folders / sub-folders.

Just hit the Esc key to close the Properties dialog when you have finished counting the number files inside these folders.

Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

Microsoft Windows XP Professional

Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 Update Rollup 2

Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/297694

When you:

create a new volume on a local disk.

plug in a removable disk with existing volumes.

plug in a removable drive (for example, a USB floppy drive or PCMCIA flash card).

add a physical hard disk or CD-ROM drive to your computer.

use Offline Files and specify items to be synchronized when you log on.

You may experience any of the following symptoms:

An existing mapped network drive is no longer available in Windows Explorer.

The new drive is not available in Windows Explorer.

The new drive appears in Windows Explorer, but when you open it the contents of the existing drive are displayed.

The existing drive appears in Windows Explorer, but when you open it the contents of the new drive are displayed.

After your computer starts, the network drive may be replaced by the new drive.

After you disconnect the new drive, the mapped network drive letter has the same logical drive letter that it had before you added the new drive.

You may receive the following error message when you start your computer:

This behavior occurs if you map a network drive to the first available drive letter after the drive letters for the local volumes and CD-ROM drives. When you install a new device or volume, Mount Manager, which assigns drive letters to volumes, does not recognize the mapped network drive and assigns the next available drive letter to the new device or volume. This causes a collision with the existing mapped network drive.

(The RJ11 to BT cable is the same as the telephone lead provided by Sky if you have Sky Box digital TV, or also an old modem cable). By moving the telephone recording cable you record off the additional telephone extension rather than the phone direct.

Please see diagram as example to work around loss of power on digital cordless telephones.

How to allocate a fixed drive letter to the UltraDisk DVR10..

If in doubt visit http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307844 for information on removing, adding, changing drive letters in Windows.

Click on images, for a larger screen shot.

Removable Storage

Microsft Windows has a tendancy to get its USB mappings in a muddle, it’s well documented, discussed and also hotfixed by microsoft, generally caused by failing to remove old mappings for devices that are no longer needed. With over 250 million results in google, we thought we would create another how to!

UltraDisk DVR10 CD partition with Software

The UltraDisk Software when launched from the DVR10 may show that you have no recordings, or in some cases fail to respond and hang. Most likely as it is looking at the incorrect removable storage drive for your recordings, drive letters are not mapped correctly with multiple USB removable storage. With the number of devices attached and detached drive letters are not released correctly.

UltraDisk DVR10 CD partition with Software

You can also Download the UltraDisk DVR10 software to the desktop and launch the Voice-List application when needed. Make it even more accessible by pinning it to the dektop.

UltraDisk DVR10 CD Software with no data showing

Launching the Ultradisk voicememoplayer.exe from the CD partition of the UltraDisk, or from the desktop/taskbar (DOWNLOAD DVR10 SOFTWARE) you will see that the software is pointing to a drive letter at the top of the screen, this is where the rec_data folder should be mapped to on a permanent basis. In the case below the removable storage location is I: but has not mapped to correctly via Microsoft Windows.

UltraDisk Software looking at a drive not allocated by Windows (FIG 1)

To correct the drive allocation problem you will need to allocate the missing drive to the letter to the letter specified in the UltraDisk software, in our example it should be mapped to letter I: (see Fig 1) This is a simple process and convenient to know when using a number of USB devices or in an office network environment. It also enables you to specify drives that should be included or excluded from virus checking.

Manage my computer

Mapping, Reallocating and removing drive allocation is a simple process, managed via the ‘my computer’ window. To do this

Go to Start button, select Computer, Right mouse click over my computer in the left menu and select Manage from the drop down list.

Manage my computer : Disk Management

Select the Disk Management option from the left menu from within the computer management concole and note that the UltraDisk 2GB

DVR10 is not mapped to a Drive letter (highlighted). We can identify it by

its Fat32, and storage space. (some is reserved fro the software, so its always a little bit less!)

Manually allocate a drive letter (that matches the one referenced in the Software)

This device should be now mapped to the letter corresponding to the drive letter referred to by the voicememoplayer.exe software. In our example it was I.

Drive letters will vary depending on what you have connected to your PC.

So map it to the one referenced in the voicememoplayer.exe software.

Right mouse click over the device that has no drive and allocate it to the drive required by the voicememoplayer.exe software.

Selecting the drive letter

If the drive letter is not in the list, but reffered to, it means it is already allocated to a removable device and this will need freeing up before you can dedicate it to your UltraDisk DVR10. Maybe a camera or external device has mapped itself and not released it, you can reallocate the drive to another letter.

Thats more like it.

Map the UltraDisk drive to the correct drive letter and relaunch the UltraDisk software, it will now show the contents of the mapped drive showing your voice recordings.

UltraDisk Microphones are of the Electret type, perfect for use with digital voice recording, PC & MAC, in a choice of Omnidirectional and Unidirectional clip-on lavalier microphones.

Electret condenser microphone

An electret microphone is a type of capacitor microphone invented at Bell laboratories in 1962 by Gerhard Sessler and Jim West. The externally applied charge is replaced by a permanent charge in an electret material. An electret is a ferroelectric material that has been permanently electrically charged or polarized. The name comes from electrostatic and magnet; a static charge is embedded in an electret by alignment of the static charges in the material, much the way a magnet is made by aligning the magnetic domains in a piece of iron.

The vast majority of microphones made today are electret microphones, Nearly all cell-phone, computer, PDA and headset microphones are electret types. They are used in many applications, from high-quality recording and lavalier use to built-in microphones in small sound recording devices and telephones. Though electret microphones were once considered low quality, the best ones can now rival traditional condenser microphones in every respect and can even offer the long-term stability and ultra-flat response needed for a measurement microphone.

Monophonic microphones designed for personal computer (PC) use, sometimes called multimedia microphones, use a 3.5 mm plug as usually used, without power, for stereo; the ring, instead of carrying the signal for a second channel, carries power via a resistor from (normally) a 5 V supply in the computer. Stereophonic microphones use the same connector; there is no obvious way to determine which standard is used by equipment and microphones.

Omnidirectional

An omnidirectional (or nondirectional) microphone's response is generally considered to be a perfect sphere in three dimensions. As with directional microphones, the polar pattern for an "omnidirectional" microphone is a function of recording frequency. The body of the microphone is not infinitely small and, as a consequence, it tends to get in its own way with respect to sounds arriving from the rear, causing a slight flattening of the polar response. This flattening increases as the diameter of the microphone (assuming it's cylindrical) reaches the wavelength of the frequency in question. Therefore, the smallest diameter microphone gives the best omnidirectional characteristics at high frequencies.

The wavelength of sound at 10 kHz is little over an inch (3.4 cm) so the smallest measuring microphones are often 1/4" (6 mm) in diameter, which practically eliminates directionality even up to the highest frequencies. Omnidirectional microphones, unlike cardioids, do not employ resonant cavities as delays, and so can be considered the "purest" microphones in terms of low coloration; they add very little to the original sound. Being pressure-sensitive they can also have a very flat low-frequency response down to 20 Hz or below.

Unidirectional

A unidirectional microphone is sensitive to sounds from only one direction, therefore is the perfect choice for podcasts, poetry, reading, voice recording, dictation, interviewing.

UltraDisk Microphones are available to purchase here.

Dell Media Direct is a DVD player program that comes with most Dell-manufactured computers. It is a good program, but can be quite insistent upon it being the default program to pop up when a CD or DVD is put into the drive. Dell overwrite the Windows defaults by loading up the application on start up.

If you would like to have a different program play your CD DVDs like media player, you have to disable the AutoPlay feature of Dell Media Direct.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Instructions

1 Open the Control Panel by clicking the Start button in the lower left corner and going to Control Panel.

2 Double-click the AutoPlay icon. For the type of media, choose DVD Movie.

3 Choose the program you'd like to see when you put in your DVD. Now, whenever you insert a DVD, Dell Media Direct will not pop up.
Audacity.

How do I download and install the LAME MP3 encoder?

Because of software patents, we cannot distribute MP3 encoding software ourselves. Follow these instructions to use the free LAME encoder to export MP3 files with Audacity.

Windows

Go to the LAME download page.

Under "For Audacity on Windows", left-click the link "Lame v3.98.3 for Audacity on Windows.exe" and save the file anywhere on your computer. Do not right-click the link to the .exe file.

Double-click "Lame v3.98.3 for Audacity on Windows.exe" to launch it (you can safely ignore any warnings that the "publisher could not be verified").

Follow the "Setup" instructions to install LAME for Audacity. Do not change the offered destination location of "C:\Program Files\Lame for Audacity".

The first time you choose "File > Export as MP3", Audacity will ask for the location of "lame_enc.dll". Navigate to "C:\Program Files\Lame for Audacity", select "lame_enc.dll", then click "Open" and "OK". In Audacity Beta, choose "File > Export", select "MP3 Files" in "Save as type", then export should proceed immediately.

If you prefer the Zip option for the LAME download, save the zip file to anywhere on your computer, extract "lame_enc.dll" to any location, then show Audacity where to find it as in Step 5 above.

In case of difficulty, please view our more detailed instructions on the Audacity Wiki.

Mac OS 9 or X

Go to the LAME download page.

Click to download either "Lame Library v3.98.2 for Audacity on OSX.dmg" or "LameLib-Carbon.sit", according to your operating system.

Double-click the .dmg to extract "Lame Library v3.98.2 for Audacity on OSX.pkg" to Finder, or use Stuffit to extract "LameLib" from the .sit (either of these may happen automatically).

Double-click the .pkg to install "libmp3lame.dylib" in /usr/local/lib/audacity, or save "LameLib" anywhere on your computer.

The first time you choose "File > Export as MP3", Audacity will ask for the location of "libmp3lame.dylib" or "LameLib". Navigate to that location, then open the file and click "OK". In Audacity Beta, choose "File > Export", select "MP3 Files" in the list of file types, then export should proceed immediately.

In case of difficulty, please view our more detailed instructions on the Audacity Wiki.

Linux/Unix

Follow these instructions on our Wiki to download and install a suitable LAME package from the internet.
Other frequently asked questions...

UltraDisk DVR 10 Digital Voice recorder user manual

UltraDisk DVR10 User Guide Manual Instructions
